7 Seconds to Land or Lose a Job

nwacc_color 2BENTONVILLE, AR — Seven seconds, that’s the amount of time experts say you have to make a good impression on a recruiter according to JobLingo Founder Dr Jan McCormick.

Northwest Arkansas Community College is bringing in employers and experts as part of Employment Readiness Week.

Students and anyone else who wanted to come got a crash course on the dos and don’ts of a job CP color logointerview, and some of the pointers are pretty interesting.

“Sometimes it takes a mentor to tell you the truth,” said McCormick.

Dr. McCormick works with Arkansas Career Pathways, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund, Goodwill, DHS, Workforce, Washington and Madison County Drug Court, numerous non-profits and schools. On Wednesday, she was breaking down what it takes to impress an employer.

“First appearance is extremely important and you have to kind of sell yourself as opposed to just your skills,” said NWACC senior nursing student Amy Bokolas.

“It’s about squaring up and connecting with people…The person with the most skills doesn’t always get the job… Employers hire your energy as well,” said McCormick.

“I’m excited, really excited. I’ve waited a long time for this so, make my kids proud… I’m ready to get a job and get out there,” said Bokolas.

Today’s event was sponsored by the Arkansas Career Pathways Initiative. Northwest Arkansas Community College is hosting additional workshops and resume reviews throughout the week.
